I’ve Met with a few Utah Divorce Attorneys; How Do I Choose which to Hire?

Hiring a Utah divorce attorney is stressful.

It’s stressful because if you mess up and hire the wrong one, the damage to you and your family can be devastating.

Less money, less time with your kids. Not good.

You want to avoid all that, which is why you decided to meet with a few divorce attorneys before you hired one.

And now you’ve met with them, but you still can’t decide who to hire.

So, how do you choose?

If I were you, I’d ask myself the following questions to help with the decision:

  1. Which attorney communicated with you the most before and after your consultation?

Communication between you and your attorney is key to a successful divorce case, because the better you and your attorney communicate, the better your results tend to be.

Let me put this bluntly: if an attorney doesn’t communicate with you when you’re going through the consultation process (i.e., when he’s trying to get you to hire him), then he won’t communicate with you after you hire him. Sorry, that’s just the way it is.

So, did you get emails and texts before your consultation? Did you receive follow-up texts or emails after your consultation?

If the answer is no, then communication during your case will probably be lacking.

  1. Which attorney did you feel most comfortable with?

You need to feel comfortable with the attorney and law firm you hire. It’s that simple.

If you hire someone because you think she’s a great attorney, but you can’t stand her personality, then you won’t work well with her because you won’t like her.

Pick a divorce attorney who puts you at ease and one you know you can work with.

  1. Which attorney has the best system?

Most attorneys work alone, which means they don’t have a team, and it also means they don’t have a system that help their clients obtain the ideal results they want.

Instead, attorneys sort of do what they’ve always done, because that’s how they do things. Not a lot of individual care or thought goes in to things when it’s done this way.

Look for an attorney who has a team and a system. That system should always be improving and helping client achieve their goals.

  1. Which attorney does only divorce?

In Utah, most attorneys who do divorce cases take about 10 per year. It’s a really small part of their business.

Not sure about you, but I wouldn’t trust my family and money to a part-time divorce attorney.

Instead, you want someone who does divorce 100% of the time. You want an attorney who lives divorce and has helped hundreds of people like you going through the same things you’re going through.

  1. Which attorney was honest with you and told you upfront what your case would cost?

When you meet with the vast majority of Utah divorce attorneys, they won’t tell you what your case will cost.

Instead, they’ll say something like, “Well, it depends on a lot of different things.”

Then they’ll tell you to pay them a few thousand dollars upfront, and then they’ll bill you additional for every second they work on your case.

Ultimately, you want an attorney who will be honest with you and tell you upfront what your case will cost.

Conclusion

Once you’ve asked yourself these five questions, I think you’ll have a clear idea who to hire.

This is because when you answer these questions, one attorney’s name will usually repeat itself.

That repeated name is the attorney you should go with.

When you’re going through a tough time and need legal help, this firm isn’t just a one-person operation. It’s a team of attorneys who work together to support you every step of the way. So you’re not just getting a lawyer, you’re getting a legal team behind you.

Navigating the legal system was a steep learning curve for me, and my situation was fairly complex. What stood out about this law firm was the way multiple attorneys collaborated to address my case. It wasn’t just one person working in isolation, but a team supporting each other to find the best path forward. That kind of collective effort is a real strength, especially in hard out complex situations like mine.

There was one issue I felt should have had a different outcome with the court. When I brought it up, the team responded in a very professional and respectful manner, which I truly appreciated. It came to my understanding that the legal system sometimes works in a way that is distant than I thought. This was presented to me in a way that someone outside of the legal system could understand.

In my experience, this firm takes the time to not only assist you, but also help you understand why things are happening. That made a big difference for me, and it’s something that really sets them apart.
Response from the owner:David, thank you for our conversation and taking the time to leave this review.
