What Are the most Popular 50/50 Custody Arrangements in Utah?
50/50 custody is an increasingly popular custody arrangement with Utah divorced parents.
In essence, 50/50 custody means one parent has the kids 50% of the time, and the other parent has the kids 50% of the time.
It’s simple in theory, but how do parents make it work in real life?
In other words: what kind of 50/50 custody schedules are the most popular with Utah families?
There are really two schedules that almost everyone follows when they share 50/50 custody, and here they are:
- Week-on-week-off.
The week-on-week-off schedule is popular because it’s so simple.
One parent has the kids for a week, and then the other parent has the kids for a week.
Parents switch the kids once per week, usually Sunday around 7 p.m.
Simple. Clean. Easy to remember.
- 2/2/5.
The 2/2/5 schedule is the most popular 50/50 schedule.
In the 2/2/5 schedule, kids are in one home every Monday and Tuesday. The kids then go to the other parent’s home every Wednesday and Thursday. You then alternate weekends, so each parent gets an equal number of weekends per year.
The advantage of this schedule over the week-on-week-off schedule is that kids know where they will be most of the week, every week.
Essentially, this schedule gives kids an anchor because they will be in the same spot most days every week.
2/2/5 is the most popular 50/50 schedule. Parents choose it about 80% of time in my experience.
